The main reason we are opting for garbage collection every two weeks is to encourage more recycling and composting. With a slight adjustment in our habits and improved sorting practices, our garbage will be free of food waste, making it less attractive to animals. This change contributes to cleaner and more effective waste management, significantly reducing landfill waste.
Not only do we want to encourage better sorting at source (recycling and composting), but the ultimate aim is to reduce the amount of waste produced at source.
According to the Bilan 2022 de la gestion des matières résiduelles de l’agglomération (waste management report), over 40% of Montrealers’ garbage bags are made up of organic materials (food and green residues), and 20% of recyclable materials.
