Participation in food waste collection will be mandatory for buildings of 9 to 29 units. Here’s what you need to know:
- The City provides small kitchen counter bins for every unit, as well as big green bins with a 240 litre capacity. Every building will eventually be contacted by the City to coordinate bin delivery and to provide both building managers and residents with all the necessary information.
- All fees related to food waste collection are already integrated into your municipal taxes.
- Small bins used by residents in their homes are to be emptied into the large green bins, which building managers are responsible for maintaining and for putting curbside on collection days. The process resembles how garbage and recycling are currently managed in these same buildings.
As over 1/3 of typical household waste is food waste, this will likely result in the need for less garbage bins as more waste is diverted from landfills.
